The Space-Cowboy’s Guide to Vacation

Have you ever had a conversation with a tourist visiting your country of birth or current residence and after they tell you about all their adventures, all of the landmarks, wonders and events they’ve seen and experienced in the land you call home you come to realise when it comes to exploring your own backyard (sometimes quite literally) that you haven’t seen or explored much of it at all.

The popularised term Staycation (that being a vacation spent at home or in one’s own country to enjoy activities and attractions rather than going abroad) has become an option for many out there. Arguably it can be easier on the wallet and solve many issues for those who may not so easily be able to travel outside of their country to begin with altogether.

How many people truly explore the current city they reside or neighbouring cities nearby truly? What local show or event is going on this weekend that you know about? When is the last time you visited the local parks or visited the nearby walking or cycling trails.
Fair questions no?

Often through conversations I hear from others of the most majestic holidays they’ve ever had in countries abroad and certainly I am not saying those experiences are not warranted as they are very much beneficial. The need to experience new cultures, new environments and see spectacular sights are a must IF indeed you can do so. What I am pointing out again is that more often than not you don’t have to venture too far for your mind, body and spirit to get a similar if not more intimate experience just a few feet or a short drive away.

I’m being very serious when I say if you have a backyard/garden (if you are fortunate to have on)  how much time have you spent there? Reading a good book with a refreshing beverage in the comfort of your own garden just hits different than being on a sandy beach or public park yet the sun still beams down on you the same.

Everyone’s situation is different, you may have accommodation issues, money is tight and you may not be so mobile to get around, truly I understand. However with whatever limitations you MAY have let me ask you this before you go…

Where would you like to go today?

Regards,

Alexander / Zenchi
